Sleep & Facial Hair Growth
« on: 21/10/2007 23:45:35 »
I'm a 32 year old chap, and observe that my facial hair seems to grow faster than most of my peers - i.e. I shave every morning but by 5pm my growth looks like they'd look after 2 days without shaving! Sometimes it seems to grow faster than others, but I'm not certain.
Does hair grow faster when you're awake than when sleeping?
Is it just that you tend to get up later, or does facial hair really grow faster if you've been out drinking?

Most things tend to grow faster when you are asleep.

The thing about hair (particularly facial hair) is that we do not normally notice the true length of the hair, but rather how much of the hair sticks up above the skin.  When you are awake, you are likely to be rubbing your skin against things more than you do when asleep, so you will wear away the upper layer of the skin more than while asleep, so the hair will stand more proud of the skin.
