yes i can scratch it with my fingernail. It is very hard to do but i can leave a mark in it. What do you think.

andrew k fletcher,

 That may also be a possibility. Sounds like a good story to me, that would make sense. That someone may have done that and dumped it in a hole in the ground and covered it up, From when i am not sure. It would have had to have been at least 20 years old, cause this business was here then.

Blakely Mineral Gem shop in Greenville may be able to better help you identify you specimen (if they are still in business).  Otherwise, look for a mineral shop (not a jewelry store) or a nearby college or university.  I'm still guessing galena- but they should be able to help pin it down.

 You have been really helpful. I will see if they are still in business and if not i'll see about a nearby college. Thanks for all your help. I would not know any of this without yours and everyone elses help. Thanks you all are great.
