Shockwaves - in the first picture shock waves produced by an F/A-18 are visible below the tailfins.  The second picture is a close-up that shows them above the aircraft too.

Just links because the pics are quite big.

These are great pics and quite amazing. Looking at the other pics on the site are also amazing. The F/A-18 in the pic in the first link is doing about 700mph under the golden gate bridge at an altitude of about 20 feet and surrounded by numerous small pleasure craft on the water. It is in a transonic state (just below supersonic). I am amazed this was permitted on safety grounds but the pictures are great and I have no reason to doubt the authenticity. It makes me want to go to the next display in SF.

P.S. A note on the site says the F/A-18 did not fly under the bridge - it just looks like it did. It points at a video which shows the flypast too.

Aircraft flying under bridges has a long history, an aircraft has been recorded flying under London tower bridge.
When I was in Kiel I was told about an allied aircraft that attempted to fly under the bridge at the entrance to the Kiel canal and did not make it!

Inverted flight under a bridge http://www.jumpingpixels.com/aerobatics2.html

Heh - it's also worth looking at the Bob Hoover 'Stopped Engine Aerobatics' movie too, not so much for the stopped engine stuff but for the roll sequence right at the end where he pours some drink from a jug into a cup sitting in a holder on top of the panel, while flying the roll one-handed ;D

The Spitzer image was taken over a period of 24 hours and is a three-colour composite showing infrared observations from two Spitzer instruments. Blue represents 3.6-micron light and are older stars in the star-forming cloud as well as unrelated stars behind and in front of the cloud, and green shows light of 8 microns, highlighting dense clouds, both captured by Spitzer's infrared array camera. Red is 24-micron light detected by Spitzer's multiband imaging photometer and shows heated dust that pervades the region's cavities. White knotty areas are where the youngest stars are forming. This pic is an example of galactic cannibalism.

They call it cannibalism, because the larger galaxy "eats" (merges) with the other. Yes, I am an astronomer!

At the moment,I am studying meteorites and am preparing for a summer research project involving meteorite impacts on the Moon.

Well, I know absolutely nothing about meteorites! :D
But if you wish to enlighten me, I will be happy to listen!  ;D

Anything specific you want to know? I will do my best to answer. Personally, I think meteorites are cool. Rocks from outer space, older than Earth, that traveled billions of miles to get here... [8D]

Umm... what are their composition?
To be honest I have no idea! What are you researching? What is there to research (no offense intended, I just have no idea [:I])?

Meteorites are classified into three basic categories: irons, stones, and stony irons.
Iron meteorites, or “irons”, are actually a combination of iron, nickel, and cobalt. Iron is the predominant metal, with 5% up to 50% nickel, and a trace of cobalt.
Stone meteorites, also called “stony meteorites” or stones, are mostly believed to be material from the crust and mantle of asteroids. A few stony meteorites are thought to be from comets. Stone meteorites contain approximately 75% to 90% silicate materials, such as olivine and pyroxene.
Stony–iron meteorites, or stony–irons, are mixtures of silicates and iron–nickel in roughly equal proportions(stony-irons are rare).

Researching meteorite impacts on the Moon will help decide where to land future space missions, and where to build a space station on the surface.

What is the definition of a 'meteorite'? How big or small do these things have to be until they are called a meteorite?

A meteorite is a meteor that survives the intense heat of atmospheric friction and reaches the earth's surface. So, as long as it reaches the surface, size does not matter  :D
