Do you think this is right?

Everyone knows what a Gazelle is right. No not that animal. But the work out machine. Well I rode it for 50 minutes and 27 seconds, went 3 miles, and burnt 362.9 calories. My average speed was supposedly from 2 mph to 5 mph. What do you think. Anywhere near correct?

The Gazelle in particular is an odd machine. Although it claims to burn alot of calories, there are reviews that state otherwise.
http://www.fitness-events.com/gazelle-exercise-machine.htm
And on Epinions there seem to be alot of reviews where people have had trouble with the computer:
http://www0.epinions.com/reviews/Fitness_Quest_Gazelle_Freestyle/sec_~opinion_list/pp_~1/pa_~1#list

I'm not sure how much you weigh, but an hour on an eliptical at 130lbs should burn around 500 calories. Maybe the calorie calculator in the machine is off?

I have the Gazelle.  The computer is crap.  It died on me ages ago.  It never worked right.  I still use the machine a few times a week...but oh how I hate it!!!  I think walking is easier.

Yup i'm right on 130. It might be off. The batteries have been in since um 2 years ago. LoL. That's why I asked. And Yeah The gazelle works out everythin if ya do it right. lean forward, back, on heels, on toes, oh man it does good lol. So you think I burnt more. Do you think i went further then 3 miles thouhg?

I'm not that familiar with the Gazelle, but I do know that running burns roughly 100 calories per mile. For your height/weight/age I would say it would actually be more like 110-115. I am no nutritionist, but I am roughly your age and also a die-hard runner. The few extra calories that you supposedly burned on the Gazelle probably stem from the extra up/down motion you were doing. From my experience, exercise machines' computers tend to be pretty accurate, but ONLY when you enter their weight into them.

Only if you were "running" at one mile per hour.

Sounds about right! Again, the conditions greatly contribute to the numbers. For example, today I ran 9 miles. So for me, that would be normally 990-1000 calories. However, today I ran through frozen snow with extremely uneven footing. So I would say that with all the extra effort in balancing, I burned an extra 200 calories or so. I really have no idea how accurate this is, but that is off of how I felt afterwards.

Actually, I thought it was more than that...like 50 calories per 5 pounds. Not sure though.

Whoa..wait a second! Check this out:

"Increase the amount of muscle in your body. For every extra pound of muscle you put on, your body uses around 50 extra calories a day. In a recent study, researchers found that regular weight training boosts basal metabolic rate by about 15%. This is because muscle is ‘metabolically active’ and burns more calories than other body tissue even when you’re not moving."

A pound of muscle is a lot though. That would take a lot of work. Hw often do you workout? And what do you do?

Um I do around 150ish sit ups and push ups and occasionally go downstairs and run on the stuff we have and then work out on the machine dad got a few years ago.
