Pause your pores when holding your breath?
« on: 20/07/2004 20:32:24 »
Hi Everybody,

Breathing is one of my favourite things to do, I love it and highly recommend it to all my friends and family.....but I have heard that when you hold your breath, the pores in your skin close up...is this true ?....I heard it as a remedy to get rid of a mosquito having lunch on you, but I don't think that's true, correct me if I'm wrong though. So, do your pores pause when you hold your breath , and if they do, why ?

Your heavy breathing answers will be happily received.

No.  Try looking at your pores while holding your breath.

As for mosquitoes, if they start sucking your blood, you can tense up your muscles a lot and they'll get stuck and can't stop sucking.  After a while, they get so full of blood they pop.  This is cool.

Fantastic! I'll give it a try next time my bothersome mosquito friend tries to keep me awake all night!

Holding your breath causes a vasoconstriction, which maybe limits the mosquito's blood supply.  Never heard that it closes your pores.

is it really a vasoconstriction coz i think the BP should increase while holding breath.

Actually, holding your breath might be of assistance in warding off mosquitoes because mozzies are strongly attracted to carbon dioxide and follow the carbon dioxide gradient produced by our exhaled breath to home in on their next meal !

The only snag with the plan is being able to hold your breath for long enough !
