Hiccoughing is a reflex reaction to irritation in the body in the region of the stomach.  It is a warning that something is not right down there and is often caused by excessive alcohol, food or hot chillies etc.  If you go any further you are likely to vomit (be sick) which could be thought of a a very violent hiccough that expels the stomach contents.

You have a little flap down there that becomes irritated and causes you to hiccup. Same thing with babies sometimes theres is underdeveloped and so after drinking they spit up easy and certain things can irritate the flap to cause hiccups also.. at least thats what the doctor said years ago. I just can't remember the flaps name!

I think it's called the Glottis. But I could be mistaken.

I use to have a friend who had a very sensitive gag reflex. Things like hiccuping, or certain foods, or eating to big of bite would irritate it. Not pretty.
