Well it'd be kind of hard since it depends on what your eyesight is and how much city light there is nearby and what time of the year as to how many starts you can see in the night sky ... but I guess it'd be interesting if someone actually tried to count them.

Am I dead? Am I alive? I'm both!

You'd need some sort of grid to look through cos once you start hitting the high numbers you'll start to  miss some and double count others etc...and as the world spins you'll gain others in your field of vision and lose some too. A photograph would be the best thing to use and I bet someone out there has counted them cos I remember hearing on astonomical documentaries that there's (insert number here)stars that you can see with the naked eye etc

A long-popular number was 10,000 stars visible to the naked eye. That number is no longer true for most light-polluted skies.

I recently just read something interesting in a book, since light take a while to reach us from such distant planets, the star we would be looking at, we'd see it as it was thousands of years ago.  So as far as we know, the star might not even exist anymore.  Were looking into the past when we gaze at the beautiful lights in the sky.

To see a world in a grain of sand.
