Thanks. Do you know why or how?

I would ask you to define what you mean by 'fall in love'.

I would guess that in general the answer is probably yes - we are basically just animals, and there is no single thing that we can do that other animals cannot do (that is not to say that we are not different to other animals, it is only that it is the totality of what we are that is different, rather than a single behaviour that is different); but it is not really possible to give a more specific answer without being clear as to how you would describe falling in love in a way that you might be able to recognise it if a non-human animal were to do it.

My two dogs won't let the males in my house come near me.  If my husband or my son tries to hug or kiss me in front of the 2 male dogs they start attacking.

Strange question...but yes. Animals could feel affectionate and obliged to protect you, like my dog, Tuxedo. He's a big softy, but many times my brother's have punched me and he growled at them. I'm his favorite. ;D

Many times in literature an animal is affectionate toward a character. Maybe vicious guard dogs with snarling mouths and snapping teeth don't protect you out of "luff" but yeah, it's definetly possible.
