Dear Corespinologists ,

See this piccy of the earth and it's core ?

Nice eh ?

ewe could cook some mean marshmallows over that !!

Now I know there are theories that the cores changes direction but do we know what direction it is moving in now ?

As a firm believer in empirical study I took this apple core and spun it !....all seems fine !!

But core you justify the comparison?

Well, as ewe can see.....that apple core is bigger than the earths core...so yes...I think it justifies comparison !!

The next question is:

Does the earth's core actually spin? This hasn't been answered adequately to my knowledge. The change in the magnetic field seems to indicate that the core is neither uniform nor spinning BUT we really do not know. I am open to other evidence.

Excellentay !!......this was one of my many postulations about the earths core.
...Lets hope a passing Earth Corelogist passes by and comments.

BASS - get your buttocks in gear

I go skiing one day and JimBob throws a hissy-fit!

Of course the core spins.  The real question is, does it spin differently than the rest of the planet?

Research on the solid inner core suggests that it does, indeed,  spin differently.   Geopysicists Xiaodong Song (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and Paul Richards (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) have shown that the core spins slightly faster (around 1/2 degree/year faster) than the rotation of the earth.  Their research employed north-south oriented seismic waves (earthquakes in South America, seismic stations in Alaska) and the iron anisotropy of the solid inner core. (The outer liquid core generates the magnetic field)

However, their research can only provide a "snapshot" (30 years or so) in the immensity of geologic time.  Given that slowing the spin of the inner core by 1 degree per year would "reverse" its spin relative to the rest of the planet, such reversals are a real possibility.  No one suggests that the core actually switches its direction of spin (too much inertia).

Neil, unlike us earthologists, your apple core is not dense enough to make an unimPEACHable model.

See ?...see people ?...this is WHY you need to register.......

...these peeps are a valuable resource....(well...JimBob is debatable I suppose  ;) !)

Thank you Mr Bass Sir.

Would I demonstrate gross misconduct of my cognitive functioning by finding the need to presume (in question form)...that the core(s) is/are spinning in the same direction as the Earth is ?

Maybe not GROSS misconduct?? :o

Yes, the core is spinning in the same direction.

No Neil, it spins north-south.

Are you alright? Is everything working well? Headaches? Hemorrhoids? Confusion? Double Vision? Please advise soonest. Help will be sent for.
