Hee hee hee.. Some how Thats what I thought someone would say! LOL.. I kinda thought Hmmmm I wonder if there is even anyway to know given that we are all different as far as size shape etc. That seems to me it would have a bearing on how many there really are??
Is this an impossible Question? LOL!

Well, in the tiny (~ 1mm long) nematode worm, Caenorhabditis elegans, we know that there are exactly 959 cells in the adult hermaphrodite and 1031 in the adult male, but I think that humans are a lot more variable. You can see from the number of cells in something really small that it will be a very big number!

Yes as I had imagined.. I agree that it will be a very big number.. I was just thinking to myself that we really don't know.. but that is a interesting comparison...

As you say the human cells may be more variable, but do you mean in cell size or just the fact that humans are so much bigger?

I meant that the differences between people would be huge in terms of number of cells! A normal person has between 20,000,000,000,000 and 30,000,000,000,000 red blood cells... that is a huge range, and it is only one type of cell. What I'm really saying is that the numbers would be totally meaningless!

The estimate for human cells in the human body is about 100 trillion (10^14); why do I labour the word "human"? Since we are outnumbered at least 50 to 1 by the bacterial cells living in and on us. We are, quite literally, passengers in our own bodies!

Chris

[Note added in proof: meaning that there are probably at least 5000 trillion bacterial cells living on us...]

Hmmm... the bacteria in us are in our gut, and the gut is really a part of the outside that runs through us! :)

Don't we have many bacteria on us as well as inside our bodies.. Besides the gut?

Unless we are ill, the bacteria we have are all in our gut, or on the surface of our bodies. They are not in our tissues and organs.

I'm ill,so That is how  I get bacteria in my heart.. and they can attach thenmselves to the fatty cholesterol etc and move from place to place regenerating or growing in new spots.. That is confusing..

I always find it quite dark that it takes the largest cell and the smallest cell to make another human... what, we couldn't work some average sized cells?

Absolutely - the face carries 10-100 million bacteria per square centimetre. That's roughly the same as an armpit.

Some sources told us that the average adult human body is made up of "50 million million" (50 trillion) cells, while others put the figure closer to 10 trillion. Science NetLinks, a resource for science teachers, stated that there are approximately "ten to the 14th power" (that's 100 trillion) cells in the human body.

Can only be estimated but there seems to be concensus at around 50 trillion (50 million million).
