Paul's paint fumes thread reminded me of this.

Hubby and I own and air conditioning company.  Any time I have to go into an air conditioning supply store, I get a weird taste and something like an oily residue in my mouth.

I've noticed the same think if I go into a auto supply store.

Any explanations?

p.s.  Mods, if you can think of a better topic title, please feel free to change.

I would guess that your senses are being bombarded with the smell, perhaps you are a super smeller? (well there are super tasters, I took a shot :) )

Do other people notice the oil smell?

I had to add that you could be pregnant.  ;)

Since quitting smoking, my sense of smell has become much more intense.  I've never asked anyone if they noticed the smell or not....I just thought maybe I'm strange. :)

LOL....and no I'm definately NOT pregnant!

I react similarily to diesel.

Even a hint of diesel (fume or liquid) gives me a metallic taste in my mouth and eventually a massive headache if exposed over longer periods of time (e.g. half an hour or so).

My take on it is that it's a (hyper)sensitivity symptom, almost a bit like an allergic reaction really but without 'heavy' (conclusive) symptoms. Needless to say, I stay as far away from it as I possibly can; which might not be very easy for you Carolyn as you're in that business.

In the 'alternative' sector there are quite a number of therapies out there that can help with allergies and sensitivities; especially some branches of Kinesiology have had some excellent results. Perhaps, if you're really bothered by this, it's worth investigating.
