Domes on Titan.
« on: 09/09/2004 21:35:17 »
Can you imagine living in a giant dome on Titan. I mean full of oxgen and nitrogen with a trace of co2. There are so many natural resources in an on Titan. Under the dome pressurised water. Natural thermal energy, views of ethanous oceans...

I suppose we'd all have heating....I'd like to come too...if there's no heating, we'd all have to huddle together, so, we need girlies to join in too...:D

A mix of science reality in Titan being there and reality in design and fiction because of cost and time.A stretch of the imagination. The domes each would have artificial light sources that would ark across the inside of the dome top from one side to the other at varying temperatures to imitate seasons. Giving light and warmth. Creating humidity from the lakes below. Each dome 330km across. Energy from Titans interior into which the dome base would stretch down 800km.

Didn't Asimov write a fictional account about a domed society on Titan?

I went to a public lecture the other day about the exploration and discovery of mars. It was funny, someone asked at the end something about project o'ryan, and the lecturer was very careful not to mention what it actually was!!

And about the heating, there couldn't be coal in Titan obviously so I don't know what you'd do about that. The plants you had to give you oxygen would have to be genetically engineered to deal with different nutirents and less light or whatever, but would solar panels still be effective at the reduced light level, to get energy for heating? Is there another way to heat?

Am I dead? Am I alive? I'm both!

Drill a big hole in the ground and splash some water down it. Assuming that Titan has an active core from gravitational sheer, geothermal energy should heat the water and shoot it back up as steam. Which you can harness for electricity and heat.

I suppose  a cordless drill using masonary bits would be the drill of choice here....perhaps a Bosch or even a Black & Decker.....Spare batteries would certainly facilitate here too.

I expect that deep down it is hot in Titan, as with that sulphur spueing volcano on a satellite of Jupiter. Nuclear core or gravity sheer. I would say that several kilometres down it is hot and the energy could be used for a day lamp and electrcity in the artificial nights.
