Now that this satallite has been hit by an american missle and blown apart, won't some of the fragments have been accelerated and some been deaccelerated? Surely the ones that have been slowed will now have an orbit that is going to decay very quickly?

The satellite's fragments will vaporize through the atmosphere.
My question is instead how many people believe that operation had the purpose that the US government said and not something else.

I don't think an explosive charge was used which would limit the number of fragments boosted into higher orbits.
It was just a highly irisponsable ploy by the military to cock a snook at the Chinese, the Russians will do the same next.

Pull the other one it's got bells on it. I am not a conspiracy theorist but I just don't believe that the USA would bother to destroy a satellite because they thought a bit of hydrazine fuel might cause environmental pollution.  They had lost control of the sattellite and could not destroy it before reentry and wanted to make damn sure that no bits of the satellite big enough made it back to earth to allow others to find out how they build them!
