Is it REALLY true that diamonds don't scratch apart from the man-made hard substances?

Like what if I get a diamond.. and like SCRAPE it on the road, like I would with cheese and a cheese-grate.

Would there not be a single scratch?

Neil, care to do the experiment for me? ;D

You wouldn't scratch the diamond (why do your think they use diamond drill bits)

BUT... you might cause it to chip or fracture!

OR worse yet, have that massive stone fall out of your wife's engagement ring and be lost forever!!

But can a poorly formed diamond be scratched by a one with a pure chemical composition and structure?

The diamond tips on record player styli used to wear out. It's possible to scratvch a diamond with something softer than it (i.e. everything) but the other thing gets damaged more. Your records got worn more than the needle.

So diamond does wear out, even though it is by something softer?

As a firm believer in empirical study I took my tennis ball sized diamond (sorry don't have a diamond as small as a golf ball)....and scraped it along the entire car park that is the M25...........and lo and behold, it's still tennis ball sized and still nice and shiny.....though I did get a speeding ticket !!
