Our stereo is like 13 years old now that I think of it, but we do have a new DVD play that's surround sound and I know that I can hook my mp3 player up to it and play it (it has a USB drive in the front) and I was wondering if I could hook the two up so I can listen all my um thousands of songs on the dvd player cuz dad wont' let me jam in on the computer.

Thanks Sim  :)

Not easy doing it using USB because the USB works on a master/slave principle, and both the stereo and the computer will probably try and be master.

Possibly you can buy one of those cables for file transfer using USB devices, but am not sure if they will work in this case.

The other option is just to wire up the two using the sound card (wiring the AUX in and out on the stereo into the line in, and line out, on the sound card).  I have my computer playing through my mini-stereo that way (saves me having a separate set of computer speakers), but not tried using the connection the other way, but it should work.

Dearest Ryan,

Are you able to take a piccy of all the stuff on the back of your 13 year old stereo and also the back of the DVD player thingy and paste them here ?

Cos I reckon you just need one of these !

Not even from a 'line out' in your sound card? I used to have my pc hooked up to a very old stereo using one of those stereo jack>phono leads.  You could even use the headphone out if you don't need it - which is what I do with my laptop.

Ryan, as Ben said above....don't you even have a headphone jack on your computer......I've never known one that didn't.....this is what I am referring too....take another look !!..

...and that's where the Single jack will go

...and most audio products have regular phono inputs to them ! (that's what the red and white jacks are)

That'll be a composite video then, just the one plug, yeah?

I'm surprised nowhere on your computer has a jack audio out - how does it plug into speakers normally? - If your soundcard has 2 mono out (one for each speaker channel) you can get mono jack>phono leads, that should do the trick.

Both Neil and I are assuming your stereo has phono inputs though - what are your 'back of the stereo' options?

My old set up was:

3mm stereo jack (in line out on the sound card) -> Stereo phono (in aux in on amplifier)
Stereo phono (in aux out on amp) -> 3mm stereo jack (in line in on the sound card)

This meant that I could play out on my stereo speakers, but pipe tape & vinyl back into the pc.

Sweet, I got it acutally hooked up to the stero system, but only one speaker works and it sounds terrible. haha. Both work if its a CD or the tuner. huh..
