The flat area at the very front of the iliac crest is the attachment for the satorius muscle that goes all the way down the front of your leg to the inside medial part of the knee.  (http://www.bartleby.com/107/illus430.html) On the same drawing there are also ligaments for muscles and other muscles that attach to the iliac crest so if you have  been running expect pain.

My high school football coach - a man I completely hated, passionately hated - whose motto was "You only know your doing your job is if you are in pain" would get your attention by punching you on one of your hip pointers - the area we are speaking of. It hurt like hel*!!!! especially if it was the end of football practice.

So since you have been running - this is only to be expected - pain indicates some injury. In this case, it is just an indication of small tears in the muscle and fascia (the connective tissue in and around the muscle that also forms the tendons) that is healing - the scar tissue mending the tears is stronger than the original so it is really an indication of building strength. The muscles themselves also tear and this forms new, large muscles as well.

These "hip pointers" are a common complaint in athletes. They are best resolved by a staggered exercise regime that allows for some rest as well as a good amount of exercise.

My guess is that your IT band (illiotibial muscle that runs from your hip, down the outside of your leg to your knee) is rubbing on your hip.  very common running ailment.  (I actually have the opposite problem right now where the bottom of my IT band rubs on my knee).

To prevent this, you need to stretch that muscle more before and after you run.  Its a very weird/awkward stretch to do, and i don't even know how to describe it.  google search for "IT-Band Stretch" you ought to be able to find some pictures of how to do it.
