What purpose does the pinky toe serve?
« on: 26/04/2008 01:06:21 »
You can't move it, well I can't. You can't really do anything with it. I think it is just plain useless, but maybe I'm wrong.

Why do we have pinky toes?

Thanks Sim  :)

Firstly, I can spread my pinky a little, although I cannot raise it independently of my other toes (in fact, the only toe I can move substantially independently of my other toes is my big toe).

But the point is that all of the toes help provide the width of the foot, which helps with lateral balance (stops you falling over sideways).

In modern terms, probably much of the function of the separate parts of the foot have been made redundant by our wearing shoes, but the foot was designed before shoes were invented.

I can move my pinky toes around quite a bit!  They are an important part of your anatomy.

If you didn't have them, what would you stump in the midde of the night when you have to run to the bathroom?

It may seem useless but you don't know what you've got till its gone. think about when you're running (barefoot) and you want to slow down and change direction quickly, the outer edge of your foot takes most of the weight and sort of rolls onto your little toe.

I agree it provides the body with a certain amount of balance!

It's not the toe's fault it's only little- give it a chance. Someone has to be the smallest.

Like you, I don't see a huge difference if we have a little toe or not, but it does help with balance. As a dancer, I know this!
