John asked the Naked Scientists:

There was a question about being lost in the desert and finding a case of wine.  Dehydration was the result.  I am not trying to be rude, but what if you drank your own urine.  After the initial bit it would be come quite clear. would this get you by?

What do you think?

Dont all body fluids have salt in them?

My guess is no..because the salt would make you more thirsty. Although ive read some stuff about urine having good causes e.g helping to heal wounds and such.

Im not 100% sure though

Th answer is yes. It is a part of training in survival schools for the military. Drinking your own urine also helps replentish vitamins and minerals in your system as urine is the primary way your body gets vitamins out and a major way of expelling minerals necessary for life to continue.

Having just had food poisoning and resulting convulsions in the emergency room (casualty ward if you are British) due to the depletion of electrolytes (fancy word for metallic ions) I can bear (sic) personal witness to the need for a good electrolytic balance within the bodies chemical system.

If i was stranded with another person and we had ran out of drinking water, would i be best off drinking my own urine or the other persons?

and why?
