   Which is correct?

The lunar maria and lunar craters are different kinds of objects and probably arose from different processes.

The lunar maria and lunar craters are the same kind of object and probably arose from the same process.

Heh - a tricky question:)

Either could be argued to be true...  but if the term 'maria' refers to the surface of the magma filling the impact basins (or craters) in which they sit, and not the impact basin or craters themselves, then they are different types of objects, arising from different, but causally related processes.
