UK People...put your clocks back !
« on: 31/10/2004 03:08:21 »
Us Brits have just put our clocks back an hour...it's now GMT over here...Do the majority of countries (or all countries) do this ritual twice a year ? forward an hour in Summer, then back an hour in winter ?

It certainly cause plenty of debate over here.

Spring forward, fall back.  That's the only way I can remember which way to set that damn things.

so is it the opposite way round in the southern hemisphere? I guess 'spring forward, fall back' would still apply anyway. I wish it was about to be summer here again.

Now here's a little poser to get you thinking.

The earth's rate of spin hasn't changed, so why should days become shorter in winter, and longer in summer ?

Is it because the Earth wobbles on it's axis ?

(thought I'd better elaborate mode)...err and therefore presents more or less(geographically dependent) of a face towards the sun at different times of the year......

This is due to the tilt of the Earth in the plane of the Sun ... Of about 23 degrees isnít it? So either the northern or southern hemisphere of the earth is subjected to more or less light... You can see this when you shine a torch straight on to the ground itís circular, and then when you tilt the torch one side of the circle elongates and widens. Not only is day light effected but the change in temperature is caused by the angle of the sun to the horizon and the exposure of day light, not the distance from the sun as they teach you in GCSE (lol).
