How similar are margarine and plastic?

Jane asked the Naked Scientists:

I have heard that margarine is only one molecule away from being plastic, is this true and if so can you explain.


What do you think?

With the right choice of deffinition of plastic it's probably true.
On the other hand, it's exactly as true of any other fat.
Chemically the fats in margarine and in butter or vegetable oil are very similar.
