Are bank cash machines running on Windows?
« on: 26/06/2008 19:35:17 »
I had a worrying experience this evening. I went to the cash machine and one of the pair had a message on its screen. It was a typical Windows Error message which words to the effect

"Internet Explorer (!!!!!?) error - Can't find C:/ blah/blah"

Scratch the surface and that's the only security you appear to have- Windows for Godssake!
I fondly imagined some serious bespoke software would be taking care of all my millions.

I could rant on about this all night.  And tomorrow night as well.  And the night after that too.

Basically, it comes down to crap management.  Rather than take any responsibility, it is better personal strategy for ignorant/incompetant  management to out-source responsibility, so in this case, your bank can say it's not our fault but that of someone else.

Are you really that surprised?  Way of the world gal, these days, at least.

Sorry for the informality but I still feel some bitterness about the whole computing thing.

I suppose all these cash points from the different banks need to understand each other and the easiest way is through a version of windows. Many cashpoints also show adverts and the use of a windows interface would make it easy to change whats being shown.

Is it really such a surprise? Considering most machines from sweet factory production lines to car manufacturers use windows why not banks?

Considering most banking systems don't use Windows, I think it is suprising.

Maybe not inside the bank, but I would expect the automated tellers to have some form of software. And considering MS are so diminant I would expect something from them to be used.

I understood that, Graham. I was refering to the comments after the email. It reminds me ofradio show phone-ins after football matches, the callers tell all listening how they would and could have done it better and offer the manager their advice, as if he's listening, and actually hinks they could do better.

They will probably be using a Windows based server which is quite common, otherwise its Unix.

A lot of  our U.K. Govt. departments also use them, the DWP for instance.

Unix is indeed the OS of choice; although Linux is getting quite a nice little foothold these days (yes, yes, yes - I know Linux is Unix wearing a nice hat).

The most annoying thing about banks is when you use the cash machine and ask for say 100 and it gives you 30. Then when you put the card in to see how much is in the account its actually taken the 100 out. Then when you go into the bank the person is like 'Yeah we where expecting somebody to come in and tell us this'. Asif it just happens all the time, and its happend THREE TIMES to me. Swear next time it happens I'm going to sue for compensation lol
