Neil&Elke friar  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris,

If you put a 12volt current via electrodes into a solution of sodium bicarbonate what would the products be? Hydrogen? Oxygen?

I've been told the products could be fed into the air intake of any internal combustion and improve it's efficiency?

Neil

What do you think?

The sodium and bicarbonate ions will help the current to flow through the cell, but the products of the electrolysis will be hydrogen (at the cathode) and oxygen (at the anode).
