Who invented the sausage?

This is serious stuff and I have a theory that the sausage, which was popular in 5th century BCE Athens, was adopted by the Romans who copied a lot of things the Greeks did.
Then, everywhere that the Romans went the sausage went too. There is a sausage culture in most European countries that were part of the Roman Empire right through to Turkey and parts of North Africa.
There are places that have sausages where the Romans didn't get to such as Scandinavia and Poland - but they may have got their sausages from neighbouring states later on.
I like sausages (though British ones are my least favourite) and I have a Serbian beef sausage in the fridge now. :)

Does anybody know their real provenance?  ???

I wonder if the sausage could date back 1000's of years before you suggest.

This is pure conjecture.

Early man kills prey for food and takes it back to his settlement for the tribe. This is all very well so long as you have enough people in your hunting party to carry a whole dead animal, but if you don't, how do you get the meat back to the settlement?

Suppose you cut off the meat in pieces, how do you carry many pieces?

How about you gut the animal, squeeze out any part digested food from the intestine and fill it with the meat. Not only a free readymade shopping bag, but also the meat can be cooked in it and it can be eaten.

Gosh, I'd have made a good caveman, Iíve got the right looks too..

Personally, I have to say I do like a nice bit of sausage.

Perhaps I should rephrase that.....

Each to their own, I say. Or in other words, 'whatever blows your skirt up.'
