What controls the length of a hair?
« on: 13/09/2008 12:01:35 »
doug scorgie  asked the Naked Scientists:

Human head hair grows continually and would eventually trail along the ground if it is not cut.

Question 1. How did our "caveman" ancestors cope with this before knives or scissors were invented?

Question 2. Why does other hair (underarm, chest, pubic) not do the same?

Question 3. Can this phenomenon (unique to Homo sapiens) be explained in evolutionary terms, as an advantage over other primates?

Regards
Doug Scorgie

What do you think?

They didn't need knives or scissors to cut hair.  Sharp stones would be able to do the job just fine.

Or their head was bashed in before it got that long anyway.
Dinosaur teeth could've done it.

...

I have a (male) friend who does not cut his hair. It never grows longer than to his waist, so I think there is an upper-limit for head-hair, of maybe 70-80cm.

I also have a Question of the Week on a related subject, due for airing in the next week or so - so listen out for the eventual answer.

Doesn't different types of hair, simply, have different growth cycles to eachother? The different hair will grow for a fixed amount of time then there is a rest period, and then it begins to grow again...on, off, on off...

Straight up - it was a relatively recent documentary about burial practices there. I'm sure it was genuine - they only had it in passing, not central to the narrative but in the background.

Looks like you're trying to advertise a website! I like getting my hair cut at my hairdressers, don't you? I've never had much joy trying to cut me own hair! ;);)
