Whilst on the subject of electric hobs (which is what most seem to have in this part of Germany), they retain their heat enough that you can turn them off and carry on cooking (with Hattie Jacques). So for example, cooking noodles or boiling eggs, if you time it correctly, you only need to heat up the hob, put the saucepan on, and immediately turn off the hob.

We also have a wood-burning stove, and its great for potatoes, casseroles, curries etc. Anything that needs a long slow cook.

Also, save water by not flushing every time (especially overnight). If it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down.

You can also get "Hippos" that you put into the water tank of your toilet, so that less water goes in every re-fill. They're plastic boxes that just take up a bit of space. I believe that you can get them through your local water board. Alternatively, put a couple of bricks in the cistern instead - does the same job!

I think I prefer bricks as I hear Hippos can be vicious.

That is just a rumor. My pet hippo is rather mellow if I keep him in beer. THEN he can become vicious.

Rainwater harvesting is a reliable way to save money, once installed, every time it rains it earns you money.

Behind every black cloud there is indeed a silver lining.

Go in the supermarket 3/4 of an hour before they close and buy cheap bread, veg, fruit, meat etc.

Bread and meat and most veg will freeze without blanching, The best fresh baked bread can be purchased less than 50% of normal cost. Even as cheep as 5p a loaf some times. If you are not short of cash though, please leave some for others as the stores have many savy visitors before closing time.

Now is the time to get that Lucien Freud you've always wanted - one went yesterday for a mere 5.4m - well under what was expected - but still a lot for one he hadn't even finished.
