Dear People who know stuff,

Ewe are klevur right ?

So, what's happening here ?

Where's the rest of the land ?...did it just fall off all around this thing and leave this all by itself ?...Or did a big stacky asteroid thing attempt to make a kebab out of the Earth ?....sounds reasonable to me !

What's it all about ? What's with all the layer stacky things ?

I just do not know !

..and I'm going to sit right here, fold my arms in a huff until someone tells me what I want to know !

Thanks

hugs & Shmishes

mwah mwah mwah !

you were right the first time. there will have been weaknesses in the rock around all the sides, and the rock probably has lots of vertical weaknesses so if you undermine it it collapses into a stack rather than something looking like a sand pile. So the land falls away from around it, leaving the stack.

It's the 'Old Man of Hoy'. Nutters actually climb this for kicks. You can see here that not all the land mass around this stack has eroded yet. But, fear ye not, the sea shall have it's way, one day.

Looks like the stack of pancakes I had for breakfast!

Over millions of years, sediment laid down in ocean accumulates as different layers- sands, muds, limey muds, reefs...

Heat and pressure lithify the sediments (change them into rock), so you end up layers of sandstone, shale, limestone.  This is such a boring process (geologically speaking) that we call it layer-cake geology (JimBob's area of expertise).

Erosion, most notably by waves in your example, wears down the rocks, leaving the chimney behind- probably because it contained fewer fractures than the surrounding rock (more resistant).

Fracture systems it is. You can see one running up and down the second picture - the redish-brown erection.

These stacks are very impressive, but this I think is even more so.

Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Dorset.

A close-up of the surface reveals holes thought to have been left by trees from the Jurassic period.
