Make way a Segway

Why are Segways illegal to drive on the road and on the footpath. They are very environmentally friendly and great fun. I had a go on a tourist trip. I want one but can't ride it in the UK. Should I write to my MP?

I didn't realise they were illegal for use on roads & footpaths. What about shopping centres? We could play Segway skittles with the shoppers!

How about 9 pins with people as the pins and Segways as the "ball?"

They must be legal here. The one I saw was being operated in the Arcata town square during a big celebration lots of police etc.. them seemed perfectly content with them here although I really do not know if they would be legal on the street . California has some pretty pinpointed rules about mopeds scooters and such so I pretty sure there must be some restrictions but I am not sure what they are. You have to have a drivers licence for any engine 50 cc or higher.. I don't know what those are powered by I was assuming electric or gas.. Does anyone know? How big is the little motor?

What an amazing piece of kit, a personal horseless chariot - needless to say they are not legal on UK pavements.
From the videos I've seen so far the main problems with them would be:

1) They might get nicked.
2) The lower orders would soon get hold of them, misbehave and make everybody's lives a misery taking them through nature reserves and anywhere else where the peace would be disturbed.
3) There isn't room on pavements as it is with pedestrians who look in one direction and walk in another, cyclists, invalid runabouts, school kids who insist on going in groups six-abreast.
4) They would be an insurance minefield.

That said, I'd like one.

Isn't that what I said?

But why can't we drive them on roads. They are electric, I think, and are ace.

Like blakestyger said, but especially the insurance minefield bit.  That's as in third party insurance, not so much for having it pinched.

Hmm...  idea for a picture - a segway, sans wheels, up on a couple of piles of bricks.

I remember seeing a photo once of a plane on bricks because it had no wheels. Probably at Liverpool airport LOL

The above photo reminds me of the old joke...
"You know you're white-trash when your car is on bricks and your home is on wheels".

Perhaps you have better balancing skills than most other people, more likely you aren't an idiot while riding them.
