A riddle for you.....What is this man doing?
« on: 19/11/2008 15:23:47 »
A man gets on a train to go home. He boards a train that he knows is going the wrong way, even though there is one in 5 minutes that is going the right way. But gets home at the same time as if he'd taken the later train.

What is going on?

Define "wrong way" please.
I can think of another possible answer, but I can't remember how the "spoiler" thingy works.

TMM - Good guess, but nope, I'm a frayed knot.

BC - "Wrong way" - one would normally get on to a train that is going to travel towards your destination (irrespective of compass bearing). The "wrong way" here is taking the train going in the opposite direction. Does that clarify enough?

Does the train in 5 minutes stop at the station he is at?

Is he at the North Pole. I'm not sure why but that is usually the answer to this sort of puzzle.

He boards the train near the end of the line?  The train he boards is the same train that he would have boarded if he waited 5 minutes.

The second train is the Express making only a few stops along a ziz-zag route, before stopping at his normal stop. The one he passes up, though going directly towards his stop, is what we call a "milk run," stopping at every station along the way.

There is a song here someplace - "Oh, I'm beating Schrodinger's Cat, oh, ho, just beating Schrodinger's Cat, ta da!"

He boards the train going the wrong way for two and a half minutes then he gets off and gets on the train going the right way. When he gets off the train, the train going the right way will be waiting for him.

Could you two give it a rest until Dentstudent tells us the answer please?

My best guess is that the train that reaches him in 5 mis is the express train, it doesn't stop at his station, but it stops at one that's just a minute or 2 up the line. He takes the train in the "wrong" direction so he can board the fast train and get home earlier.
Since this is a reasonable thing for him to do the "wrong" direction is, in this instance the right direction.

This is the correct answer. Now, why would someone do this?

And if you've not already pondered, this "person" is me....

This "person" was put on the said train by someone, who didn't or
doesn't know the proper way that the lines should go.

Or they'd got on the wrong platform at a terminus on the circle line, even in a snow-storm? LOL

Although this individual should have looked at the indicator matrix
board or the front of the train for destinations?

Because he likes to keep his teeth warm, he boards the train going the wrong way because he is cold. I have done similar things myself....when I was but a girl.
Nothing worse than cold teeth.

Indeed! "My" train goes through "my" station at XX:05 haeding towards the main station and the terminus. It's always packed and I used to hang around at the station for it to come back at XX:09 (well, I did twice, until I realised that it was the same train that came back). But on it's return, it would be full again, as it filled up at the main station. Getting on for the extra journey was the next logical step.

Since your strategy makes perfect sense, heading away from home is the "right" direction.

Can we see the time table at the station somewhere? I think this would help us solve the problem.

Is the TGV involved?
