Warren Bosch asked the Naked Scientists:

Why does an electric iron slide freely over the surface of cloth when it is hot but not so smoothly when cold?

Thank you and very best regards!

Warren

What do you think?

The steam produced by the heat would lower the friction between the iron and the cloth, (not quite a hovercraft but similar).
