How to make clouds artificially in the lab
« on: 05/04/2005 11:35:19 »
i'm new to the group...i wanted to form clouds in lab scale for some microphysics studies! I'm aware of the cloud formation experiment in a bottle! But my requirement is quite larger than that...

Any idea how to form clouds in the lab???

For what purpose? In the past, a device known as a cloud chamber was used. You can use an ultrasonic nebulizer to make a mist, or dry ice in a bucket of water. "Clouds" are weather phenomena. To make a fully formed cumulus cloud in a laboratory is beyond my technology.

I understand that in the large dome stadiums clouds can form if the HVAC is not tuned properly.  I suppose if your research grant is large enough you could rent the Superdome for a couple of weeks to carry out the experiment.

my study is on the size of the condensation nuclei for the droplet formation...gsmollin- i read abt the cloud chambers, but they r particle detectors! But what i need to show is the variation in the cloud formation depending upon the size of the nucleus. Any idea of an experimental setup? A simple mechanism for making contacts of vapor with dust particles!

OK, I'll get a little more serious here.  I studied quite a bit of atmospheric physics in college, but never did any experimental studies of cloud droplet versus nucleation studies.

Here is a link I found that touches on what you are interested in and has some contacts.  You should craft a short and to the point e-mail to the authors of this paper and ask for their insight on how to accomplish this.  You might want to include more detail (than you have here) of what this is about and what level you are working at. A master's thesis experiment will elicit quite a different response from a high school science fair project.

Here is another link dealing with cloud modeling, though not as close to what you are looking for.  Again, check the references and try contacting some of the people listed.

My overall experience with atmospheric scientists is that they love what they do, and they love to talk about it, so you have a good starting point.  I've met some of the people at Colorado State and they are a very good group.

Good luck with your experiment and let us know how it goes!

Just get a few thousand people together in a stadium, feed them Extra Strong Bean Curry and Bourbon and plenty of extra fizzy fiz pop, turn the heat up, make it really humid...............result....instant cloud formation (err...I would recommend an umbrella )....sheesh !!.I'm finally getting the gist of this science stuff.:)
