To stop burrowing animals digging them up?????? Or perhaps the heat prevents the ground supporting the pole after a certain amount of time???

Wind driven sand is highly abrasive. Rocks placed around the base of fence posts and telephone poles prolongs their life by protecting them from being eroded away by the blowing sand.

They place them there to keep geologists entertained as they drive by.

Probably just for dramatic effect or to accentuate the phallic symbol ... I think.

Because the sand gets blown away frequently and the rocks will stay put

ooh that is nice. Have you ever seen the way that you get scouring around a rock in a stream on the beach, because the water has to go faster to get round the rock, so it can carry extra sand, so it errodes the sand around the rock. I would have thought you would get the same effect in a desert with the wind.

Maybe rocks are pious and worship telephone poles, or perhaps a telephone pole is (in the rock community) a meeting place for social gatherings, confluence and conversation.

It's well known that rocks can move unassisted across desert playas, notice the rock above at Racetrack Playa and the track it left behind as it moved across the desert.

Maybe the rocks just move themselves unhindered up next to the utility pole.  Since wind is undoubtedly the motive force, perhaps the pole acts to interrupt the wind flow (create a pressure differential) and causes the rocks to gather close by- sort of a rock magnet.  Neilep's last post may be right on the money.

I've seen pictures like that....why don't they just attach a camera to these rocks and see what they get up to ?....I've seen pictures with much larger rocks too....it's spooky !!
