Pain Killers ? Can you mix them ?
« on: 20/04/2005 13:10:04 »
A member of my staff (sounds posh eh ?) claims that you can mix paracetemol, aspirin and Ibuprofen ?...this sounds a bit dubious to me, in other words ,you can take the max dose of each drug all at the same time without harm , but is it true ?

Your answers in small doses every four hours will be most welcome.

I've certainly heard that you can combine paracetamol with ibubrofen (and have done so without obvious ill effects), as they work through entirely different routes. I'm not so sure about asprin, I think that's incompatible with either ibuprofen or paracetamol, I forget which.

You can safely (assuming no other allergies/intolerances) mix aspirin or ibuprofen with paracetamol. You should NOT, however, mix aspirin and ibuprofen.

The latter 2 agents work through the same anti-inflammatory mechanism and therefore taking both together achieves little benefit and can rot your stomach. Paracetamol, however, achieves its effects via a different biochemical route and is therefore effective in combination with an NSAID like aspirin or ibuprofen.

What about mixing prescription pain killers?  For instance, instead of taking 2 vicodin, taking a vicodin and tramadol.
