It looks to me like an abacus for calculating in base 25 rather than base 10 :)

Oh yes quite agree Sean!!....and I agree with what ever George said too !!...yes yes..I was thinking the same about the bases !!...............yeah right !!  ::) ::)

Most common abacuses have two groups of counters in each row, a group of 5 and a group of 2.  The idea is that, since 2 x 5 = 10, so each row can count up to 10.

The abacus you showed had two groups of counters on each row, but they were two groups of 5 counters, and 5 x 5 = 25.  So each row can count to 25 before you move to the next row.

thought i'd come back and say hello to everyone, hope you are all well...sorry to hear about your bad sleeping Neil and Karen..Hows are you Paul?..still around?...my sleeping has been better of late...a few bad nights here and there but overall its been good...so ive been a good happy girl!!..its shocking how different u feel when u sleep!...hope u guys sleep well tonight!...take care...
