Cookies? Phishing? YouTube? HELP!!!
« on: 02/02/2009 18:11:39 »
Hello everyone! When it comes to biology/chemistry, I'm fine, but computers.... I know very little. SO I pose this question to you as it is getting to me somewhat!

When I go to YouTube to watch clips, I get onto the site fine, but I can't watch anything. The screen to show the clip comes up but stays blank. It has no buffer bar, no play/pause symbol. Nothing. I don't know why or how, but I think it may have something to do with safety settings and cookies and phishing and that sort of thing. However, I don't really "get" them and I don't know how to get YouTube working again (I am a student and - am not just saying this - but I need it for work!)

A couple of days before this starting happening I downloaded SpyBot search and destroy to get rid of an annoying spyware virus, so I also wonder if this has anything to do with it?

Please help! No clue what this is about, why it doesn't work and I would like to, as well as wanting clips back again! Thanks!

I am using Vista. I deleted cookies and temp internet files, and that seems to ahve brought YouTUbe back. However, anotehr problem has arisen - Loads, and I mean LOADS! of internet explorer Windows keep popping up. I canīt stop it!! I have spybot and McAfee so I donīt know why this is happening...A virus I thought, but donīt know how to get rid of it. I have to shut my whole laptop down everytime it happens... :(

sounds very virus-y to me...  Try running a full check with both McAfee and Spybot, and see what that finds for you.

Shall give it a go. I figured it must be a virus but couldnīt understand why Spybot and McAfee didnīt clear it. McAfee expires in 2 weeks. Was going to get AVG after that.

Check if you have a message on the top of that youtube page that asks you to install the latest Flash software. Click it, install it, and you may be ready to go if that is the problem. It sure sounds like this. I had this multiple times with several computers in my classroom. It showed youtube pages, but no videos.

I find Firefox is a lot faster than IE. So is Opera. In fact, I think every browser I've tried has been faster than IE. I also find Firefox & Opera more robust than IE.

Oh! That sound like an adware infestation to me.
SpyBot Search and Destroy should remove that, or you can try AdAware, make sure to get the newest versions of the tools.

If you don't like Firefox, give Opera a try.

Re: "Karsten" and "...I am using Vista. I deleted cookies and temp internet files..."

The DELETE system for the cookies and Temporary internet files also notifies on its panel
that if you use "delete all" checkbox it destroys all "add on" programs into internet explorer
also! e.g. FLASH add in.

Sounds like there's something that neither Spybot nor McAfee is catching - are they both fully up to date?

AS far as I know, yeah, they're up-to-date. I know McAfee runs out soon, but as I said I'm thinking of downloading AVG instead as it's worked well for me before.
