What are optical isomers, and why are they important?

By optical isomers I presume you mean steroeisomers, which include enantiomers and diastereomers (configurational and cis-trans)?

Well for example the (+) enantiomer of limonene has the odour of oranges, but the (-) enantiomer has the odour of lemons. Are you after this sort of stuff?

Another example is fluoxetine (sold under the trade name Prozac). Racemic fluoxetine is a very effective antidepressant, but it has no activity against migraines. The pure S enantiomer, however, works remarkably well in preventing migraines.

This describes optical isomerism.
http://www.chemguide.co.uk/basicorg/isomerism/optical.html

And then you can read this
http://dl.clackamas.cc.or.us/ch106-05/optical.htm

They seem to create a difference to the molecular bonding.
"Chemically, optical isomers behave the same. Biologically, they do not. One will react properly, but the other will not.
Optically, there is also that difference which will be pointed out when we deal with carbohydrates in a later lesson."

But I think you need to define specifically what it is that made you wonder before we can answer your question.
I saw something that they might have to do with growth?

-----------
Sorry Mr Dent, you had already 'pointed' our lovely Ms Aerobatics ? to the answers..
Cake on cake my post I see:(

Ms Aerobics?
I'm very bad with names, I must admit..
Enlighten me please (if possible:)
