Do soprano males have small adam's apples?

Craig Cruz asked the Naked Scientists:
Recently, Dr. Chris fielded a question from Tony about Adam's Apples and said that women the same structure but that they are much smaller because their voices are not as deep. That's got me wondering if the a mezzo-soprano's or contralto's voice box might be visible as a small Adam's Apple.

And could a counter-tenor's voice box ever be so small as to appear as the absence of an Adam's Apple.

Thank you so much. I love your show.

-Craig

What do you think?

Well Craig, If men sing high, whether it be soprano or not, it could just mean they have a very large vocal range. This is the number of diferent notes they can hit with their voice. But yes, alot of the time (not all) male sopranos tend to have a smaller voice box. The adams apple is just the voice box sticking out a bit from the throat.

Good question and I hope my answer Helped!

The size of the Adams apple doesn't change the pitch of the voice. The cartilage grows to protect the vocal chords and as these are usually longer on a man the apple will be bigger but some women with high pitch voices can have large apples. This is due to the angle at which the two plates meet. So it isn't necessarily so.

I may be mistaken, but I think that most, if not all, male sopranos are boys rather than men and that might make more difference than anything else.

It is possible for men to impersonate a womans singing voice (falsetto),
but woman cannot do a Barry White impersonation* (bass).

[*apart fron his 1970's hairstyle]. :)

Thanks for your responses, everyone. I did not mean boy sopranos, BTW, I did mean men like David Daniels, Andreas Scholl, and Philippe Jaroussky.
