I think its purpose is mostly political there seems to be negligible scientific results for the $100 billion dollars spent so far

I have to agree. I certainly haven't heard of much going on there lately.

I think you're right; we didn't get our money's worth :) Maybe we have to look at it as an experiment; if we had not done it, we would not know how many things would react to the environment. We did gain a lot of knowledge. Maybe that knowledge will be useful.
