Can a digital camera be used as a spectrometer?

There is an add-on for raw files and it copes with my NEF files.  I have had no time to play with it but it opens images from both my Nikons.  It is called UFraw  http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/Install.html#MS

I re-iterate I have not tried and tested to any extent - ie dont blame me if it screws up your wedding photos!
