Why does my cat rub against my legs?

Paul Anderson  asked the Naked Scientists:

Dear Chris and team,

Does my cat really like me when she rubs up against my legs and
can she determine when I am depressed, or is she just hungry and wants me to put out some more cat biscuits or that yummy meat in the packets?

Regards

Paul

What do you think?

An unspayed cat will become extremely rubby against your leg when in heat or wanting to be petted..

My spayed cat would do this a lot if her dish was empty or she wanted m to brush her.. she loved that..
They do it for several reasons you need to determine by process of elimination..as to what she wants..affection food grooming or a mate and a quicky! Lol..

Your cat could also be saying 'This is mine, that's mine....'  Rubbing is how cats claim things too big to chin. You belong to a cat now!

when your cat rubs against you your cat is scenting you to let all of the other cats know that you belong to her/him...  Yes it's a harsh reality, but our cats own us not the other way around.  Think about it if your cat really begs for food for ages you eventually give in don't you.

You only need to worry if your cat is rubbing you very vigorously. It may be that they are about to try to stick you to the wall.
