What Is This Plant ?
« on: 03/03/2009 11:53:05 »
Dearest Plantaologists,

Wifey threw this away ! (there was nothing sprouting from it at the time)

I rescued it...and have been  " watering  " it with what ever drink I happen to be passing by with..cold green tea, orange juice, lucozade, diet cola and today I gave it some water !...which is nice !

Do ewe know what it is?..I'm hoping it's going to be a beanstalk because setting aside giants I'm hoping to climb it and become rich !..YAYYYY !!..I'm really hopeful about this !

On the other hand...if it's a tulip I don't suppose I'll get very far !  :(

whajfink ?

As it reveals more I will post more !!

No beanstalk I'm afraid sheepy, what you got there is a Hyacinth.

Nomadic cowboy walks into wild west bar and say's to bar maid "Hiya Cinth". She replies "Hiya Dranger".

I was just about to pile in with all the jokes but you've already done them.
Yes - it looks like a Hyacinth.
Give it some nice feed and it may get even  bigger for next year.

Neily you have a single bulb it will produce one head or stem.... of beautiful color. You need more bulbs to produce all the different colors.
They are beautiful when in bloom... mine this last year did not get ant height but they bloomed. only about 8 inches tallor so... they are usually a lot taller.

Thankfully, no-one has bred a multiflora variety of hyacinth. It is, in my opinion, one of the sillier plants we have invented, combining blowsyness and a strong perfume - a bit of a hortitart. ::)

I don't think the cola's are a good idea, the sugars, saccharine or whatever is in them, will promote unwanted growth on the soil. Bulbies like a nice drop of water, no milk or sugar. Also, your bulb wont take too kindly to having its pot used as a compost heap!
SO GET THOSE TEA GROUTS OFF AT ONCE!!!

I will cease the diet fizzy drinks (cos your red font scares me )

Are the tea leaves really that bad for it ?

The tea leaves will build up a mulch around the bulb which will hold water. This could result in the bulb rotting.

The bulb needs only water to grow & flower, all the nutrients it needs for this purpose are stored within the bulb. Only the roots need be in the soil to get the water it needs.

Your Bulb is experiencing a caffiene sugary high.....you'll have to watch it closely now as It comes down..... sudden withdrawls may have adverse effects on your plants attitude and physical stature....Lol...

By the way.. that area you pointed at looks as if it has a bit of frostbite. Is there any chance she was too close to a cold glass window during cold weather the last couple weeks?

Thanks Kareny Mam,

Though the plant is in my orifice office, which happens to be the coldest room in the house, it does not get that cold !!

That specific area is all mushy and brown...could it be that it has been watered too much  ?!!..I think wifey might be supplementing my watering too !!

whajafink ?

Entirely possible...it does not have to freeze to get kinda frost bitten... jus to wet then close to the glass.. the glass is usually very cold when there is to much water.... I would not water from the top but in the tray ....where you see all  the water....
Hey My daughter bought one of those tall glass bulbs that you fill with water and invert onto the soil. It waters throughout the week... works really good.... no over watering... you just refill the bulb whn empty!
