Does collagen production affect telomere length?

Polly asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi  I was wondering if the production of collagen and elastin in skin cells
helps telomeres shorten? As if it were "wearing out" the cell? Also if
nanocircles got developed enough for human use would it be a safe alternative to telomerase?

What do you think?

I don't know for certain - I don't think there have been any studies looking at this - but I can't see it myself. Collagen is produced through precisely the same mechanisms as any other cellular protein (DNA into RNA, through the ribosome, tRNA attached to amino acids, formation of a peptide chain, etc) so would probably have no greater effect on telomere length than production of any other protein.
