Why do we yawn, and why do we sleep?

Greg Dardas asked the Naked Scientists:

Hello,

I've been wondering about this for years and have never heard a satisfactory explanation:  Why do people/animals yawn?

For that matter:  Why do we sleep, instead of simply resting?

I went to medical school and through an entire neurology residency and still haven't understood either of these phenomena.  Can you help me out?

Love the podcast and the website.  You guys are wonderful!

Greg Dardas

What do you think?

So why do we sleep? This is a question that has baffled scientists for centuries and the answer is, no one is really sure.

i don't know why we yawn but we sleep to let our subconscious work and if we didn't we would eventually die.

Scary!

Yeah but we would die a lot sooner.  So get lots of sleep and don't stay on the internet all night... like i do.

I have had stints of 5 + days with 0 sleep and I can attest to the fact that you loose all concept of time..reasoning becomes difficult and halucinations are definely annoying to say the least.... I would say those times are quite miserable and I would have much preferred sleeping.
talking major grumpy...Lol.. no fun.. I tend to get silly and giggle a lot wen I haven't slept which is ok but I could turn around and be snippy or crying the next minute....

An other suggestion: maybe just to give our eyes a rest. imagine our poor eyes if we didnt sleep.

Hay, this may not mean anything but has dopamine levels not have something to do with sleeping. I'm sure it has something to do with jet lag too.

we yawn for the same reason we stretch.
To keep our joints from becoming stiff

But doesnt eating and talking stretch the jaw? It would seem a waste of energy to spend it on a yawn when we eat and talk dont you think.
p.s. not trying to disagree with you im just trying to say that it seems a pretty illogical thing to me.

it doesnt stretch it enough.
Sometimes we need to open very wide.

I'm speaking from personal experience here so I know what I am talking about.
