Is New Zealand moving towards or away from Australia?

Depends on which island.  The north island is moving eastward relative to the south island.  The Pacific plate is being subducted beneath the Australian plate along the north island- this is reversed for the south island.  Then there's the Alpine Fault...

Do not know whether to agree or not.

Here is what the NZ Geologic Survey says the relative plate movement is:

The red arrows show relative movement and the amount of movement in millimeters per year. The islands are galloping along - FAST !!

According to this, the north island is moving to the east away from OZ.

The red arrows are, at their base, attached to the plate for which they are indicating movement. As indicated below, the trenches are in front of the moving plate. They indicate the movement of the Pacific Plate near the North Island, towards Antarctica on South Island. I forgot to label the trench but I am so lazy I am not going to go back and do it. So THERE!

The movement can be seen better on the map below. The colors in between OZ and NZ are the rifting that has occurred.

Yep, it is doing the same thing the Pacific Plate is doing. It is moving in the direction the red arrows are pointing.

(That is because it is ON the Pacific Plate.)

Looks like only half of the South Island is moving towards Australia.
Is that right?
