« on: 24/03/2009 22:51:57 »
To make a 2M solution of acetic acid do you dissolve 144ml acetic acid in 1000ml water?
To make 4M solution of acetic acid do you dissolve 288ml acetic acid in 1000ml water?

You mean grams?

You only need two formulas:

n=cV
n=m/M

In which case you would need 4 moles of acetic acid for the first one. :)

Why 144ml? You mean 114ml maybe? Acetic acid density is 1.05 g/ml so 2 mol = 60*2 = 120 grams --> 114ml.

However, you can't do as you say, because 2M means 2 mol in 1 liter *of solution* and not *of solvent*. So you have to put the 114 ml of acid in a measuring container (don't know the name in english, in italian is "matraccio tarato"*) and then you add water, mixing well and stabilizing temperature, until you reach a final volume of 1000ml of solution.

* It's "volumetric flask" in english:
