The question as to whether science has improved the human conditions can only be answered with a "yes."

There are movements, such as the Fundamentalist Christian movement of these days that is essentially a reaction to the advent of science in people's daily lives. This began before Darwin, in the late 1700's - early 1800's. It is essentially a movement regarding belief but it also opposes some of the technology that make life possible and some technology that give humans a choice about their own biological future.

There are also movements on the other end of the social spectrum as well. "Transhumanism" is the term most often applied. the definition - from Wikipedia - is:

Transhumanism is an international intellectual and cultural movement supporting the use of science and technology to improve human mental and physical characteristics and capacities. The movement regards aspects of the human condition, such as disability, suffering, disease, aging, and involuntary death as unnecessary and undesirable. Transhumanists look to biotechnologies and other emerging technologies for these purposes. Dangers, as well as benefits, are also of concern to the transhumanist movement.

I am technologically enhanced - I have two artificial hip joints, fist put in in 1977 with revisions since and, as the result of a shattered shoulder that could not be fixed, I also have an artificial shoulder joint. Had I not had these put in I would be confined to a wheel chair today and be in a tremendous amount of pain. I also would have not been able to walk so I would not have been upright to be in a position to have my shoulder crushed.

I made choices about the use of technology - and most fundamentalist will take of advantage of technology to enhance their lives though medical science.

The question: would you be willing to be technologically enhanced? How far would you go? When do we loose our humanity as a result?

I am not sure that there is any essential difference between using technology directly on our bodies and indirectly in the rest of our lives. Mostly, someone else uses it for us and we have no option.
It's not a bad thing, on the whole. You can count me in.

To asnwer the question, we don't lose out humantiy, we are born human and we die human no matter how much of us is replaced or inhanced. If we were to replace the brain with a computer, then perhaps we would lose what makes us fundamentally human, but the bits and pieces that make us up are just that, bits and pieces.

If it improved my health and wellbeing I would accept most things, indeed most days I wish I had another 2 sets of hands and a rear orifice that would happily accomodate a broomhandle. ;D

I'd like a co-processor so I can switch my brain off during the work hours.

Define "technologically enhanced".

I don't see how technology could replace faith and love.

I love this question. I would have to say that I find almost all proposed cybernetics and prosthetics as something I would use to improve myself. I do have one line that I will not cross though, and that is anything that involves the transfer of my consciousness; be that to a new body entirely free of living tissue, or to some sort of computer program even including a VR game. The reason is because i do not know how the human consciousness works and i fear that the my original consciousness would be replaced by the new rather than actually `transferred.'

Though to be fair, I would prefer genetic changes as far as my limbs are concerned. Something along the lines of a Myostatin inhibitor, higher lactic acid threshold, stronger ligaments, higher percentage of muscle contraction, increased red blood cell count, larger brown fat stores, stronger bones, quicker and more efficient use of white fat stores, and tendons with more surface area and strength to cope with the stronger muscle contractions would be my absolute ideal.
