I've been thinking about this, do they just squeeze it in?  [:0] [B)] [B)]
If not, how do they get artificial/fake eyeballs into the socket?  [B)] :-\

Yes, they do just squeeze them in. They are specific fits, and held into the cavity usually by the lids.

Can they move like regular eyes? i.e. can you stitch a person's muscles to the implant so that it moves in register with their remaining eye to make the prosthesis look more "normal" ?

I believe UK prime minister Gordon Brown has an artificial eye.

You can tell which one is artificial: it's the one with a glint of humanity   :)

Whaaao! [:0] That must be so uncomfortable.
And when they need to take it out? Do a big sneeze and keep the one eye open?

I don't think they make any that can move. I suspect it could be done, but isn't because the risks would (probably) outweigh the 'benefit'.

They are made to look fairly lifelike these days. Glass eyes are rarer, replaced by plastic ones that people hardly ever have to remove.

AFAIK they just pop them out. There would be some level of discomfort, but not more than, say, applying contact lens'.

Pop them out? How? Squeeze the area around the eye? I mean, when I try it with my real eye it doesn't seem to want to come out. ;D

You would just need a tool like a sink plunger / sucker applied to the front and pull it out - schlurrp!

I thought they shoved a toffee hammer up your nose and gave it a whack from behind!

I suppose it wouldn't hurt if you just reached in under your eyelids and pulled it out.

oooooooh...C4M...what a a cool thread!!!....Still seems uncomfortable to me....

het when one looses the eyeball.. how do they protect the area just behind where the eyeball was wouldn't that lay your brain area open for infection and do they close that area off some how...?

You Know Chris I am having illusions of them making the eyeball work Like the bubble in a level.....eyeball moves over when out of balance but centers when looking straight ahead and level.... wonder if they could do that some how!
Do they do eye transplants..I thoughjht they did?

Just the cornea, (the clear bulge over the iris), is transplanted.

I Have a artificial eye and I just pick lid and put it into the eye socket and it does not hurt and it does move just like a real one and no one can tell it is fake.

Thanks BettyBoop31. How does it feel when the eye is out...not to be gross or unsensitive....just very interested...must feel quite strange.
