I am a man, born in 1873 in France.

I won the Nobel prize for medicine in the early part of the 1900's

I made major contributions to surgery, in particular transplant surgery.

I have a darker side which I am also infamous for.

You wouldnt be thinking of Alexis Carrel, would you? :) Your second last (and last) clue was what caught my attention.

Ah you got it straight away!!! Yes Alexis Carrel, the darker side sadly meant that he died while awaiting trial for allegedly collaborating with the Nazi army. He was a truly amazing man.

Yes, supposedly a man perfoming dodgy business, but he surely was a hero in transplant surgery.

Since the next one would probably be too easy, Ill give you just a few keywords/(numbers) instead.

I was born in 1834 a dim Chemist. I got to be wise and died on the twice in a benzene-like grad.

May sound foolish, and I will worship the one who guesses it :)

A dim chemist. Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev. Wise he was when he ordered the first version of the periodic table, and he did die on the second of February (The twice ;)) in Petrograd. Yes, you solved it :)

I was born in 1894 in Charleroi, Belgium.
I was a catholic priest that studied physics and astronomy
During World War 1, I received the Military Cross with palms
I was tutored by Eddington and was the first to propose a theory that is now generally accepted by astronomers and physicists, and widely known even by laymen.
