alien signals
« on: 10/07/2005 18:29:35 »
If an alien civilization wished to deliberately advertise their presence to all others in their galaxy. And lets say they wished there signal to be seen by everyone with a minimum level of technology to which we have at present.
What would be the best way to send that signal?. (no message just a beacon)

and MEMASA lets say for your benifit Telepathy is not an option

Falling in is easy, falling out is not. But, yeah, my alienness could explain many of the problems I've had at large. Damn! I can't even walk like most people here do. It must the gravity... I need sticks to walk with...

PI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or possibly the magic ratio that would be interesting that life has that in common where ever in the galaxy. Plus you want to do this with some seriously high powered radio so that the red shift doesn't make it look like crummy microwave background. Gamma ray bursts get our attention… thanks to threats of nuclear war, but then why would an alien race want to contact a warring planet :)

If you were a super advanced race, using gravitational fields or a gigantic blind to make your star appear to blink on and off would also get our attention :D.

wOw the world spins?

Clearly the most practical way of contacting them would be to send them a team of highly trained carrier Pigeon Astronauts donned with ion drive propulsion and cute little space suits. I mean they're pretty good at navigating aren't they ?...it's obvious isn't it ?

Or just send some humans to another planet, conveniently forget about them, and then go "oh look ALIENS!" :D

I shudder to think what aliens would think of us, if they were able to receive our tv shows over the past sixty years.   Perhaps, that would be enough to keep them from our front door steps. Dr. Hawkins thinks aliens could be very dangerous for our own well-being.  Maybe we should lay low?

Taking the question seriously.  Radio waves are probably the best  probably around vhf to microwave frequencies and use a very narrow band carrier wave with a very stable frequency.  This would then demonstrate the orbit of the earth round the sun.

Although another method has been suggested and that is to mine or manufacture a large quantity of a rather obscure and unlikely element and lob it into the sun.  It would then appear in the solar spectrum for all to see.

Hey maybe this is safe use for all that redundant plutonium from our nuclear weapons!
