How many species are there?.

We have a better understanding of how many stars there are in the galaxy, better than how many species there are on Earth.

So how many species do you think there are on Earth now and how have existed?

In Douglas Adams' book "Last Chance to See", I think that Mark Cowardine says that there are perhaps 10 million known species. Although the book is 20 years old, it may give an indication as to the correct ball-park figure. Of course, this 10 million is only the discovered species, and some estimates are that we have found as little as 10% of the total, indicating that there may be 100 million species.

Try a taxonomy list, (for a point in bothering).
As far as i remember, as they cut there way through rainforests there is a new species discovered every 30 seconds and it..... oh .... uh.... oh.... it er! it, it seems to be extinct now along with 70 others.

Did you know? in banks, because of the high number of "variable" contents of their databases (particularly numerically) they use a thing called a "COF" Constantly Open File in there computers.

If my memory serves me correctly from a 1995 biodiversity book I read (which it might not so forgive any errors) there are just over 1 million described species, but some people estimate there might be 100 million undescribed species. I think the best accepted estimate for described + undescribed species is around 15 million. And only something like 5% of species that have ever lived are alive today so maybe 300 million species ever?.
